About the Conference

What is BIGMUN?

The Birkerød Gymnasium's Model United Nations, in short BIGMUN, endeavours to be an annual youth conference held by Birkerød Gymnasium, HF and IB. It is organised by students and former students in close association with the Board of Directors consisting of teachers as well as the Board of Advisors. All organisers share the common passion for a better world, and have profound insight into both MUN and the UN. The BIGMUN conference has its roots in the birth of the MUN group at Birkerød Gymnasium initiated by students in early 2009. After the group had attended several international conferences including IMUNA, EGMUN, SAIMUN and THIMUN, the students were considering if the time was not ripe for Birkerød Gymnasium to follow in the footsteps of those successful conferences that stand as our inspiration. With excitement and enthusiasm, the BIGMUN project has since been drafted and we are proud, and honoured, to welcome you from all over Northern Europe to Birkerød in early 2013.

The BIGMUN conference strives to represent and pass on the true MUN spirit to both new and experienced delegates by simulating the UN as accurately as possible with a wide variety of UN committees along with crucial topics of immediate concern to the world. The fundamental UN charter naturally serves as the basis for all debates in committees, council and assemblies, where students come together to as one reach consensus on some of the most pressing political, military and economical issues from all over the world. We put great emphasis on the official atmosphere of the conference ensured partly by the facilities provided by Birkerød Gymnasium and by the organisational professionalism, but also by the seriousness of participating students and the dress of these. We also try to be as modern as possbile; this has been done by being the first major confernce in Denmark to introduce UNEP and the European Union to a conference. We are also working hard to minimize our usage of paper, in an effort to become a more green conference.

Birkerød Gymnasium’s Model United Nations (BIGMUN) is committed to embracing and spreading the spirit of Model United Nations. Through simulated UN conferences, students are able to debate numerous international political issues according to the actual parliamentary procedures of the real UN, which promotes international awareness and understanding, as well as being a platform for forming friendships through educational and cultural enrichment.

Birkerød Gymnasium’s Model United Nations (BIGMUN) er fast besluttet på at sprede Model United Nations ånden. Gennem simulerede FN konferencer, har elever med både international baggrund og interesse for international politik, mulighed for at debattere et bredt udvalg af politisk aktuelle emner. De forskellige debatter følger same protokoller og procedurer som det rigtige FN, hvilket betyder, at konferencedeltagere får en dybere forståelse af det internationale politiske miljø. Udover de mange akademiske fordele er Model United Nations konferencer også et godt grundlag for at knytte venskaber på tværs af skoler og lande igennem kulturel og akademisk berigelse.
