Letter from our Secretary General
Honourable chairs, distinguished delegates and esteemed guests,
On behalf of the secretariat it is my honour to welcome you to BIGMUN’s eleventh annual session. The conference is held on the 24th to the 28th of February 2021, at Birkerød Gymnasium in Birkerød, Denmark. BIGMUN is a conference which every year aims to create an unforgettable experience for its participants, by being a focal point for engaging and constructive debate between students from all over the world.
This year’s theme is Building Back Better. This sentiment inspires hope, perseverance and resilience, which are all needed when facing adversity. The theme encourages us to meet and overcome obstacles together as a global community. Building Back Better further urges that we not only recover after a time of crisis, but that we prepare for future ones by working towards a greener, more peaceful and equal world. It is our goal that when participants leave BIGMUN 2021, they have become more solution-orientated young people with a global perspective on development and growth.
“We live in a complex world. The United Nations cannot succeed alone”, were the words of Secretary General Guterres. We honestly believe that the meaning behind this statement emphasises the dire need for the youth to engage in the debate regarding our common future. Despite MUN just being a simulation of the United Nations, it teaches us invaluable skills which the world leaders of tomorrow must master. It guides participants to become influential speakers, thorough researchers and most importantly empathetic and open-minded citizens of the world. At BIGMUN we strive to inspire delegates to become just that. The conference provides an environment where delegates will have the opportunity to explore their own abilities, challenge themselves, gain a deeper understanding of a myriad of global obstacles and look beyond their personal opinions and to adopt those of another country.
BIGMUN is a week of fruitful debate, fond memories and new friendships. Without our committed student officers, enthusiastic delegates and hardworking staff and press, BIGMUN could not be executed to such high standards each year. We sincerely hope that you will be a part of shaping the success of BIGMUN 2021. The BIGMUN team and I look forward to welcoming you to Birkerød in February.
- Ameerah Amaani Chaudhry, Secretary General
